Meet your Instructor

Avery is an award-winning audio documentarian and podcast producer. She has been teaching audio storytelling and podcasting for the past 10 years both privately and at Wilfrid Laurier University and Fanshawe College. As the creative lead of Folktale Studio, Avery has worked with many clients to tell their stories in audio with a focus on detailed production and the listener experience.

What you’ll get

  • 6 weekly classes built to guide you along the ideation process so you can start creating your podcast with confidence.

  • Learn how to centre the needs of your listener before you head off in the wrong direction. We start with an quick education in Design Thinking and use listener insights to guide your content creation.

  • Create a realistic production plan for your podcast that takes into account your time and energy, so you don’t get burnt out.

  • Understand the technical side of podcasting. Learn about everything from how to use recording equipment and online studios, to mastering the editing process.

  • Hands-on guidance as you navigate the intricacies of podcasting. You'll receive personalized feedback from Avery in class and one-on-one during weekly office hours.

  • The option of Avery’s help in creating your first episode, including hosting or narration coaching, recording monitoring and editing help.

Week One
Podcasting 101 & Idea Generation

This session will explore:

  • An overview of podcasting and the current landscape

  • An Introduction to Design Thinking for Podcasting

  • The importance of “ideal listener” interviews and the power of understanding your audience.

Homework: Interview one “ideal listener” and start to identify podcast themes to prepare for brainstorming in Week Two.

Week Two
Idea Refinement & Brainstorming

This session will explore:

  • Techniques for effective brainstorming

  • A group brainstorming exercise - with lots of sticky notes

  • Selecting and refining your podcast idea

Homework: Develop a detailed concept and show guide for your podcast.

Week Three
Planning & Pre-Production

This session will explore:

  • Crafting a realistic plan for your podcast that won’t leave you burnt out

  • Defining your podcast format, structure and cadence by making a compelling podcast outline

  • Costs to consider before launch

  • Scriptwriting basics & Interview techniques

Homework: Create a podcast outline and/or an initial script for your pilot episode.

Week Four
Production Skills & Recording Techniques

This session will explore:

  • An introductions to audio recording equipment (with recommendations specific to your podcast and team)

  • Hands-on recording practice

  • Audio editing basics on using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and/or online AI-based editors

Homework: Record a short podcast segment to share for feedback

BONUS: If you’ve chosen the package which includes help creating your pilot episode, we will record your first episode during this week.

Week Five
Editing Review & Post Production

This session will explore:

  • Advanced editing techniques

  • Adding music and sound effects

  • Finalizing podcast episode and how to package for publishing

  • Choosing podcast platforms and hosting options

  • How to write compelling show notes

Homework: Set up your hosting platform and write your podcast description.

Week Six
Launch Strategies and Marketing

This session will explore:

  • Designing stand out podcast art and branding

  • Developing a launch plan

  • Marketing and promoting your podcast

Homework: Launch your podcast and stay in touch!

Throughout the workshop, participants can get individual feedback and guidance on their podcast ideas, scripts, and recordings during weekly Zoom office hours — open to all workshop participants.

    Help producing your very first episode at a discounted rate (usually $750 + HST)

    Additional 2-hour recording session in Avery’s office studio

    Guidance and coaching during the recording of the pilot episode

    Editing support for the pilot episode (up to a 45-minute episode)

    Assistance with sourcing and incorporating music for the podcast

    Final file, packaged and ready for publishing

  • Additional One-On-One Coaching Sessions: $170/hour + HST

    Ongoing Editing Support: to be quoted based on format of project
